DID YOU KNOW ?
Inspector vs. Engineer

The web sites of some other inspectors will warn you that “when you hire a home inspector, you are hiring an experienced professional who has training and experience in the building industry”, and that “the term professional engineer does not mean that the individual has training or experience conducting home inspections; additionally, a home inspection does not involve engineering analysis”.

Such a statement is misleading and serve only their authors, since home inspection itself is not a regulated profession, and since a home inspector is not necessarily an experienced professional either (and home inspection is a career choice, not a profession in the true sense of the term). In fact, anyone can call themselves a home inspector without any formal training whatsoever. By discounting someone who is or was a licensed professional, such statements serve only to exclude those inspectors who had the diligence and perseverence to obtain a higher level of education and knowledge. Why would you, as a purchaser or seller of a home, choose to eliminate from consideration a pool of inspectors with the best knowledge of how homes are built and how they perform?

Without researching the inspector’s training, experience, and track record, how can one be sure that the inspector is competent, meticulous, and capable of doing the job?
